My zero waste journey has made me notice just how many toxic ingredients are found in most household products I once purchased, without giving a second thought.

I have Ditched my usual Store bought chemical filled Washing Powder from our now zero waste Log Cabin life in Wales and have used this simple 2 ingredient recipe for 3 months and love how quickly you can make a batch.

Most store bought washing powders are highly processed, damaging to our health and the environment. Even though store bought powders may leave your clothes smelling “fresh” and feeling silky soft, in reality the fragrance is far from fresh and the softness is due to a residue left on your clothing which is damaging to skin (causing skin irritation, rashes and strip away your bodies protective natural oils).

Surfactants are the main chemical contributor to bad health found in conventional detergents and can also cause:

Respiratory problems (breathing difficulties)

Disrupts Endocrine function

Negatively affects fertility

Interferes with hormone balance (heart disease & depression)

Aggravates allergies

They are bad for the environment!

It is easy to forget that all those chemicals go down the drain after the final rinse! Within the last few years we are seeing the impact its having on animal and plant life. Chemicals make their way into the sea and interfere with the growth of healthy algae which in turn can kill plants, fish and dolphins.

This quick 2 Ingredient Washing Powder takes less then 10 minutes to make and versatile enough to change the fragrance to suite your taste.

I use the Citrus scented Castile Soap bar. I love the natural fragrance the Citrus soap leaves on my laundry after washing. You can also add your favorite essential oil to create even more natural fragrance. Simply add up to 10 drops (maximum) of oil into the fabric softener compartment before washing with some Distilled Vinegar (acts as a fabric softener).

Essential oils which work well are: Lemon, Orange Cedarwood, Lavender, Eucalyptus and Geranium.

Instructions
  1. Measure the Washing Soda into a bowl
  2. Grate 1 bar (140g) of Dr Bronners Castile Soap into a separate bowl. I use the Citrus fragrance, but you can use whichever fragrance you prefer.
  3. Add the Grated Castile Soap into the bowl of Washing Soda and mix. Be careful when mixing as the washing powder is very fine. I prefer to mix together outside.
